New Play Development

PLAY DEVELOPMENT AT THE SHAW FESTIVAL

Since 2000, the Shaw Festival’s mandate includes plays written by contemporary writers set in the period of George Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries (1856-1950) and we are currently accepting new play submissions. The goals of the Shaw Festival’s Play Development Program are to develop and produce new plays that can sit alongside those of Shaw, Chekhov and Coward and to develop new adaptations and translations that will tell classic stories in a contemporary way. Throughout the season, established and developing playwrights are in residence at The Shaw, and the Acting Ensemble often participate in in-house workshops of new plays.

Contemporary plays produced:
Blood Relations by Sharon Pollock
The Coronation Voyage by Michel Marc Bouchard
Floyd Collins book by Tina Landau, music and lyrics by Adam Guettel
Nothing Sacred by George F. Walker
Waiting For The Parade by John Murrell
The Magic Fire by Lillian Groag

Plays developed and produced:
Chaplin: The Trial of Charles Spencer Chaplin, Esq. by Simon Bradbury
Belle Moral: A Natural History by Ann-Marie MacDonald
Tristan book, music and lyrics by Paul Sportelli and Jay Turvey

New adaptations commissioned:
Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov, adapted by Susan Coyne
Rosmersholm by Henrik Ibsen, adapted by Neil Munro
The Invisible Man by Michael O’Brien, adapted from the novel by H.G. Wells
Love Among the Russians by Anton Chekhov, adapted by Morwyn Brebner
