This season, Allen Cole returns to The Shaw as the composer for Arcadia.
Allen’s selected credits for the Shaw Festival include composer/musical director for A Man and Some Women, Major Barbara and Waiting for the Parade; and composer for The Invisible Man and The Coronation Voyage.
Originally from Nova Scotia, Allen Cole has worked variously as composer, lyricist, book writer and/or musical director on musical theatre works such as Rockbound (Two Planks and a Passion Theatre Company), which was nominated for a Nova Scotia Lieutenant-Governor’s Award; The Wrong Son (co-produced by the NAC and Arraymusic), Hush (Theatre Passe-Muraille), The Crimson Veil (directed for the Caravan Farm Theatre by Peter Hinton), and Anything That Moves (Tarragon Theatre, co-created with Ann-Marie MacDonald and Alisa Palmer). Allen also composed and co-wrote the book for Pélagie, (Canadian Stage Company/National Arts Centre co-production, Two Planks and a Passion Theatre, Maritimes tour, 2005) and, with librettist Maristella Roca, composed an opera, How It Storms, for the Evergreen Club, a Toronto-based gamelan orchestra. Allen’s funk musical, The Bricklin, co-written with Paul Ledoux, played for two summers at the Fredericton Playhouse and is currently running in Katowice, Poland. He has also been a composer, writer and musical director for many theatres across Canada, including Stratford Shakespeare Festival, Soulpepper, National Arts Centre (English theatre) and Caravan Farm Theatre (artistic director from 1996-9).
Allen has won numerous awards, including four Doras, four Merritt Awards and a Best Film Score Award from the Atlantic Film Festival.
