Jonathan Tan

Mr Jonathan Tan returns for a third season with the Shaw Festival, playing Roland in Present Laughter and appearing in Come Back, Little Sheba. Last season, he appeared as The Crane in J.M. Barrie’s The Admirable Crichton, and in Lerner and Loewe’s musical My Fair Lady. Previous Shaw credits include The Cherry Orchard and One Touch of Venus.

Other theatre credits include Assassins (Talk Is Free/Birdland Theatre); Conrad in The Princess and The Handmaiden (Young People’s Theatre); A New Brain (Acting Up Stage); Miss Saigon (Drayton Entertainment); Forever Plaid (Port Stanley Festival Theatre). During CBC’s inaugural season of Triple Sensation, he was awarded the Judges’ Choice Award for acting. On television, Jonathan may be heard as the voice of Lee Ping on Teletoon’s Detentionaire.

Outside theatre, Jonathan is a passionate supporter of choral music in Canada and a proud alumnus of the Amabile Choirs of London, and has performed in venues such as The Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles; Dvorak Hall, Prague; the United Nations headquarters, Vienna; and for HM Queen Elizabeth II, among others.

An eclectic at heart, Jonathan plays the piano, clarinet, ukulele, and his djembe “Paula”; facilitates workshops for young artists; and dabbles in cooking, photography, and growing his own food. His eclecticism has taken him from the administrative offices of Orchestra London to his work in standardized patient programs, playing all manner of injury and affliction in the name of medical science.

Jonathan holds a B.A. in Music Administrative Studies from The University of Western Ontario, and is a graduate of Sheridan College’s Music Theatre Performance program.  He thanks his family, friends and teachers – the many pillars of love and support who encourage him to play, learn, and live life to the point of tears.
