Julie Martell

Ms Julie Martell returns to the Shaw Festival in Ragtime and French Without Tears. Last season, Julie appeared as Maria in the world premiere of Maria Severa by Turvey and Sportelli and as Lydia in The President by Ferenc Molnár.
After debuting at the Shaw Festival in 2005 playing Sister Jane in Happy End and the title character in the musical Gypsy. Julie has appeared in Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, the Weill/Nash/Perelman musical, One Touch of Venus, the Bernstein musical reading of Trouble in Tahiti, the James Lapine/Stephen Sondheim musical Sunday in the Park with George as Dot/Marie, in the Noël Coward trio Play, Orchestra, Play, as Petra in A Little Night Music, Belle Moral: A Natural History, the tour of Belle Moral: A Natural History to the National Arts Centre; as young Sally in the concert version of Sondheim’s Follies: In Concert and the 2006 musical High Society. In 2005, she received the Tony van Bridge Award for her contribution to the season. Over the winter, Julie had the pleasure of workshopping two new Canadian musicals Queen For A Day and One Step Forward and the original cast recording of Maria Severa.
Julie made her Broadway debut as the Gypsy/Louise understudy in the revival starring Bernadette Peters, directed by Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes and participated in the Grammy Award-winning recording.
Other credits include the Jason Robert Brown musical The Last Five Years at The Grand Theatre and Theatre and Company; A Christmas Carol (The Grand Theatre); Belle in Beauty and the Beast (Neptune Theatre); Sophie in the first Canadian company of Mamma Mia! opposite Camilla Scott; Nancy in Oliver (SFT) and the pre-Broadway workshop of Good Vibrations: The Beach Boys Musical (New York Stage and Film). Julie has also shared the stage with Jason Robert Brown at The Glenn Gould Studios during his first Canadian concert date.
Born and raised on Cape Breton Island, Julie holds a BFA in Music Theatre from the University of Windsor. She is the recent recipient of the 2009 Odyssey Award from her alma mater.
