ARTHUR LAURENTS (1918-2011) was born in New York City and attended Cornell University before starting to write for radio. After serving in the U.S. army during World War II, Laurents wrote his first produced play, Home of the Brave (1945). Laurents’ greatest successes came with books from Broadway musicals such as West Side Story (1957) and Gypsy (1959), and with screenplays such as Rope (1948), Anastasia (1956), The Way We Were (1973) and The Turning Point (1977, which he also produced). Laurents also directed several Broadway productions, including the hit musical La Cage aux Folles (1983) for which he won a Tony Award.
