The Shaw Speakers Series

The exchange of ideas is at the base of all we do here at The Shaw. We revel in plays that throw ideas up in the air and keep them spinning compellingly and surprisingly. How appropriate then, to open our stages to some brilliant guest speakers and artists who are celebrated for creating work that does the same and who in their own specific medium show us new ways of seeing and thinking. We welcome their insights and no doubt provocative points of view, and know that they will add a whole new layer to this season’s theatrical conversations.

At the Heart of the Matter

Lawrence Hill, author of nine books, including the provocative and bestselling novel The Book of Negroes is coming to The Shaw. He recently travelled across Canada to deliver the 2013 Massey Lectures, based on his new non-fiction book Blood: The Stuff of Life.

We invite you to join Lawrence for a talk about his work, specifically Blood: The Stuff of Life – a bold meditation on blood as an historical and contemporary marker of identity, belonging, gender, race, class, citizenship, athletic superiority, and nationhood. Many of these ideas are echoed and explored in the work we present each season. This is a wonderful and welcome opportunity for you to explore these ideas – beyond our stages – through the eyes and words of such an insightful and accomplished author.
