Theatre of Medicine – 2025 - Shaw Festival Theatre

Theatre of Medicine

A refreshing new Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program for physicians and surgeons, developed in partnership with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and delivered by the internationally renowned Shaw Festival in beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake. It has also been approved for accreditation by the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and aligns with emergent quality improvement (QI) guidelines.

The Theatre of Medicine is a 9-credit special Professional Development Program (CPD) course focusing on meaningful learning through skills and tools found in the performing arts. It goes beyond patient simulation and role-play to provide tools that can make an immediate, practical difference for medical professionals. Learning outcomes include physician well-being, professional practice, interpersonal skills and communication.

Beyond Patient Simulation

Studies repeatedly show the direct link between physician/surgeon-patient interaction and overall health outcomes, but communication and empathy can be hard to get right when time is tight, and stress is high. This unique MOC course can help you find your own pathways to making those first 10 minutes of any patient encounter really count.

Participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the impact of performing arts skills on patient engagement, shared decision-making, and health outcomes;
  • Identify three tangible actions they can take to improve the impact that their physical presence and movement have in the next patient encounter;
  • Recognize specific examples of how presence and movement have impacted an interaction embedded in a live performance;
  • Identify a theme or priority topic emerging from a live performance that impacts their practice of medicine.

Academic program includes:

  • Up to 9 CFPC or Royal College MOC credits
  • Three interactive “PowerPoint free” workshops with specialist instructors on whole-person communication, creating meaningful human connections, and shared decision-making.
  • Meet and talk with elite Shaw Festival actors and artists to share experience and exchange skills.
  • Guided analysis and reflective discussion on the course themes based on two included Shaw Festival Productions.

Your registration fee also includes:

  • Tickets to two Five Star productions at the internationally renowned Shaw Festival;
  • Delicious breakfasts and lunches prepared by the Shaw Festival in-house chef, and culinary team, in the on-site Green Room kitchen;
  • VIP wine tasting and 3-course dinner at an award-winning Niagara winery, including a signature Icewine tour;
  • Rambles in the Commons, a grassy nature reserve on the edge of surrounding wineries;
  • Add on a fantastic companion package and bring someone with you!
