Located only about three hours away, it’s an easy half day drive from the edges of Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio to beautiful and historic Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada on the banks of the Niagara River, a few miles from the thunder of Niagara Falls. Cleveland theatre fan and Shaw Festival Member Roe Green makes the yearly trek to catch up on great theatre, see some of her favourite actors, delight in some of the areas lovely white wine and enjoy a great meal but what she does most is see a lot of plays. The incredible exchange rate is a bonus, making Niagara the most perfect of getaways!
Over the course of her Niagara getaway, theatre, good food, good hotel, unusual shopping, and interesting sightseeing are all part of the adventure … in addition to meeting interesting people. The town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is great, with everything within walking distance. She is glad to arrive and when leaving, glad she came, looking forward to the next season. Meanwhile, the leisure time is minimal as most of it is spent in the theatres enjoying favourite actors Graeme Somerville, the two Patricks (Galligan and McManus), and a few others.
Formerly the Prince of Wales Hotel, and now the Shaw Club Hotel are the accommodations of choice. In addition to the plays, being a Shaw Festival Member gets you closer access to The Shaw. Roe’s favourite? A chat with The Shaw’s Artistic Director every year.
Go with the flow says Roe. You never know what may happen or who you’ll meet during your Cleveland escape to Niagara-on-the-Lake.
