Situated southwest of the Niagara Region, Pittsburgh, PA is an easy four-hour getaway from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. While the city is rich in art and culture –and sports! –its residents still travel north to Canada to enjoy some of the best theatre in the world. In the case of Loretta and Bob Barone, coming to The Shaw is a purely theatre-related Pittsburgh getaway. The food and the wine take a backseat to theatre-filled days and evenings. A visit to Niagara is meant to enjoy, theatre, theatre and more theatre. What they like the best about Niagara-on-the-Lake? The Shaw! Their idea of perfect happiness? Sitting in a darkened theatre to watch a live performance.
When arriving to Niagara-on-the-Lake, they look forward to fine theatre and visiting with Shaw staff. They see nine plays in four days! Upon departing, they are content, happy to have seen such interesting work. In between, they appreciate the meticulous work of everyone involved with the plays and their creation of the sets, costumes, lights, sound and visual elements –and, of course, the actors, of which they have many favourites, among them: Mary Haney, Graeme Somerville, Donna Belleville, Jay Turvey, Sharry Flett, Jenny L. Wright, Claire Jullien, Corrine Koslo, David Schurmann and Patrick Galligan.
They usually stay at a B&B, Davy House being the accommodation of choice. And while Niagara is a prime wine destination, the Barones enjoy beer -Oast House or Silversmith Brewery anyone? -and food for them is secondary in the land of farm-to-table cuisine. After the plays, the most treasured memory of their theatre getaway is running into and chatting with actors.
And some good things about a visit to Niagara-on-the-Lake? Well, the current exchange rate is a definite plus… and the free parking with a handicapped sticker. And when it’s all over? Their greatest regret is having to wait until next year for another season of great plays and a favourite Pittsburgh holiday spot.
