Western New Yorkers Sue & Peter Durant and Molly & Joe Reynolds make an annual visit to Niagara-on-the-Lake from their homes in Rochester, NY to enjoy great theatre as well as a wine and food, a destination where farm-to-table cuisine reigns supreme and great wines are savoured. We’ve talked with the Durants and the Reynolds -serious Rochester theatre fans -to see what makes a memorable getaway. With the price of gas and the current exchange rate, Canada makes for the ideal destination and is an easy two-hour Rochester escape.
They love the opportunity to see two, or even three plays in a day coupled with good company, food , and wine. Perfect happiness for them is walking in good weather with beauty and art close by. They love to be able to walk to everything along with the chance here in Niagara-on-the-Lake to see and occasionally talk to actors. Biking is another favourite activity.
A Niagara extravagance? A day with three plays and a decadent dinner preferably at The Epicurean, Trius Winery restaurant, or at the restaurant at Ravine Winery with a good red wine; and buying wine in the duty-free store on the way home.
If the Rochester getaway calls for an overnight, then a B&B it is, usually Cecile’s. When waxing nostalgic about a favourite Shaw memory, taking young daughters to see (Christopher) Newton’s Peter Pan and three friends going with their collective daughters to see Hobson’s Choice come right to mind. With ten plays in four theatres, The Shaw is perfect for any theatre fan.
