The Shaw is a place where artisans and craftspeople lead with brilliance and talent, not just by creating remarkable art, but through conversations and teaching. Working across multiple shows simultaneously, our experts in scenic design, wigs and make-up, and costumes share their knowledge and experience, passing it to the next generation of artists and craftspeople, a rare opportunity outside of repertory theatre. It is an opportunity that will ensure live performance – and all the benefits it brings – will continue to challenge, delight and inspire us all.
The Behind-the-Scenes Special Appeal is an investment in the craft of theatre. During the Season, more than 85 artists and craftspeople people will turn rough sketches into historical or fantastical characters and creatures, and models and maquettes into full-scale, realistic settings. Often building by trial and error, these artisans experiment with texture, material and design to create the magic you see onstage. The passion and commitment of these artisans help bring you to laughter, to tears, to joy – they bring performances to life.
